Inhabited by the Illyrian tribe of the Albani, in 1190 Krujë became the capital of the first autonomous Albanian state in the middle ages, the Principality of Arbër. Later it was the capital of the Kingdom of Albania, while in the early 15th century Krujë was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, but then recaptured in 1443 by Skanderbeg, leader of the League of Lezhë, who successfully defended it against three Ottoman sieges until his death in 1468.

Kruja is just one hour by car, or bus, from Tirana. It makes for a great visit, both as a day trip destination or as a stop on your journey to other locations in the north of Albania.

Krujë is famous for its landscapes and medieval stone houses, but above all for its citadel, the museum of Albania's national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skenderbeu and its old Bazaar, Pazari i Krujës, one of the most beautiful and well-preserved markets in the region. You’ll find some nice souvenirs, such as carpets made by local artisans.

If you are in Kruje don’t miss the Sari Saltik shrine, a holy place for the Bektashi Sufi believers. Sari Saltik was a 13th-century Alevi dervish, venerated as a saint. The Tekke of Sari Saltik is just below the top of the 1,176-metre-high mountain, somewhat hidden behind rocks, and not visible from the path.

The Archaeological Park of Zgërdhesh is a fascinating site offering a glimpse into Albania’s ancient past. The park features several well-preserved structures dating back to the Illyrian and Roman periods, including a theater, a temple, and a public bath. Visitors can explore the ruins and learn about the daily life and customs of the ancient inhabitants of Albania
