Moscopole Churches are located in the small village named Voskopoje, in the region of the city of Korce in southeastern Albania. This small and significant village used to be a leading center of Greek culture in the middle of the 18th century, as well as a very important orthodox center and home of numerous orthodox churches. Today, the remaining churches in the region are among the most representative 18th century ecclesiastical art in the Balkan Peninsula. Their fresco painting is comparable to that in the large monastic centers at Mount Athos and Metéora in Greece. Unfortunately, in 2002, the five standing churches were put on the World Monuments Fund’s watch list of 100 most endangered sites. The churches are the following:
• St. Nicolas - constructed in 1721. It is declared to be a cultural monument of Albania.
• St. Mary Church - constructed between 1694 and 1699. It is declared to be a cultural monument of Albania.
• St. Athanasius Church - constructed in 1721. Today, it serves as a cemetery church. It is declared to be a cultural monument of Albania.
• St. Michael Church - constructed in 1722. It is declared to be a cultural monument of Albania.
• St. Elijah Church – declared to be a cultural monument of Albania.
In the vicinity of the village is located the monastery devoted to St. John the Baptist, built in 1632. This monastery is also declared to be a cultural monument of Albania.
