Tirana is undoubtedly one of the liveliest cities in Southeast Europe. A city that seemingly never sleeps, full of friendly faces and featuring surprises hidden in every corner. Tirana has become famous in the international arena for the interesting colorful facades covering the gray communist style buildings.

The architecture of this city spans different periods telling a different tale of the city, from ancient Roman, as seen in the Tirana mosaic, to the Clock Tower (Kulla e Sahatit), a symbol of ottoman architecture, Italian fascist buildings, communist brutalist structures, witnessing its 50 years of dictatorship, and the most recent modernist style.

In Tirana, all roads lead to Skanderbeg Square, the heart of the city, named after the Albanian national hero. Recently renewed, it is an iconic place and a must-see for everyone who visits Albania. With an opera house, the National History Museum, the Et’Hem Bey Mosque along the sides, the huge square is perfect for a stroll.

Walking in the streets of Tirana you will see many bars and restaurants offering a variety of delicious cooking with convenient prices. Do not miss a visit to Pazari i Ri market located near the city center to sample some local delicacies.

A visit to Tirana isn’t complete without wandering the streets of Bllok, the former elite communist district. Nowadays, it is a very trendy area with bars, cafés, restaurants, and nightclubs, lining its sidewalks, giving it a cosmopolitan vibe. Ish-Blloku district is also the best place to experience famous Albanian coffee culture, home of the best espresso in town.

The best place to escape the crowds of Tirana is the Artificial Lake, located at the end of Blloku district. It is a popular destination, especially during the weekends, when locals enjoy nature and fresh air.

Nature and hiking lovers will want to feast their eyes and stretch their legs on Mount Dajti, a 1,613-meter peak just east of Tirana. The panoramic views of the city from the top of the mountain are breathtaking.

The suburbs of Tirana also offer amazing sights, adventure trails and above all the hospitality of the locals. Worth exploring are the Cave of Pëllumbas, the Erzen Canyon, the Eye of the Cyclops, or the Holy Cave. Do not leave without visiting the Petrela Castle, where you can learn more about the city’s rich history while enjoying delicious traditional food.
